Introduction to the Digital Camera

This small group session introduces you to the fundamentals of operating your camera and understanding its menus and controls. It will ‘get you started’ and have you using your camera with confidence. It suits all camera types.

If you have trouble understanding the instruction book then this is for you!

We strongly suggest you complete this session before undertaking any other Teach Me Photo workshop.

The Workshop covers the following:

  • General operation, using the screen, buttons, controls & working the menus.
  • Setting image size, quality, and flash settings.
  • Setting the correct modes for best results.
  • Focusing, hold and shutter release for sharper pictures.
  • Self timer, continuous shooting and close-up settings.
  • Reviewing, checking focus and info.
  • Question time with individual answers.

A two-hour Workshop. Maximum of 4 people per Workshop.

Better Family & Holiday Pictures - Using Auto Modes

We take you through the controls on your camera with hands on exercises, so you learn by doing. By completion you should be able to use your camera with confidence and produce better pictures of your favourite subjects.

This series of 3 x2 hour workshops is to help you get started, no matter what type of camera you have.

We strongly suggest you complete the two-hour ‘Introduction to the digital camera’ workshop before undertaking these workshops.

Week 1: Better family pictures

  • Creating better family pictures at home. Understanding how to get better backgrounds, using available light and flash to improve your results.
  • Composing the shot to be interesting. Understanding how your lens can distort your pictures if you are not careful. Lots of tips and tricks.

Week 2: Improve your holiday / landscape pictures

  • Getting better holiday pictures. Understanding how the time of day and lighting conditions affect your end result.
  • Learn key composition techniques to create ‘Wow’ pictures.
  • Find out how to capture those great night shots too.
  • Plenty of travel tips also.

Week 3: Capture family moments

  • Capture those family celebration moments such as birthdays, weddings etc. Greg shows you ways of getting fantastic results in demanding situations.
  • What to do in low light situations. Learn how to get the best out of your camera.

A course of 3 weekly, two-hour Workshops. Maximum of 4 people per Workshop.

SLR Getting Started

If you’ve graduated to a new digital SLR, or moved from film, this series of 5 weekly two-hour Workshops will help you understand your camera, its menus and controls, using Program mode and help you make the most of the power and control that advanced digital photography gives you.

By completion you will be more confident, understanding how to get the best results from your camera.

Week 1: Improved control for portraits

  • Overview of Program Camera controls and menus / RAW
  • Camera Colour settings
  • Camera light metering modes
  • Understanding ISO sensitivity
  • Exercise: Practical application of ISO when shooting a portrait

Week 2: Exposure control for better landscape results

  • Learn about critical exposure to get better results
  • Using the Compensation control and Auto Bracketing
  • Understanding Histogram and how to use it
  • Exercise: Applying exposure control to landscapes

Week 3: Capture great still life and close-ups

  • Understanding White balance and creative use
  • Focus zones
  • Lens distortion and handling
  • Exercise: Applying techniques to Still life and close-ups

Week 4: Understanding light and composition for great family pictures

  • Filters: Polariser filter use and graduated filters
  • Understanding light, Flash use / fill-flash / P / Flash compensation

Week 5: More controls and how to use them

  • Introduction to more controls: Depth of Field control, Aperture and Shutter priority

SLR Intermediate

Take your photography to the next level, beyond the basics. This is your opportunity to learn more creative techniques and to create amazing images.

Our 5 x 2hr weekly ‘on location’ workshops help you master your SLR Aperture and Shutter controls. Experience a night photo shoot plus learn more about composition.

Week 1: Using Aperture Priority.

  • Applying to use in Landscape photography. Park location.
  • Hands-on exercises cover choosing correct aperture, understanding distance effects and comparing different zoom effects.
  • Traps with focusing to avoid.

Week 2: Using Shutter Priority.

  • Applying to use in action photography. Riverside location.
  • Hands-on exercises with model covers choosing correct shutter speed for creative blur, panning with subject, freezing movement and other tips.

Week 3: Night shoot using Shutter & Aperture Priority.

  • Car light trails and creative light movement effects. Exercises using tripod and zooming. City location.
  • Long exposures combined with flash.

Week 4: Model shoot.

  • Composition using shutter and aperture combinations, utilising depth of field. City centre location.
  • Visual tricks using colour, shapes and texture. Image control using point-of-view and perspective when zooming.

Week 5: Model shoot.

  • Better portraits using aperture and shutter settings. Indoor and outdoor setups using ambient light.
  • Understanding light effects, pose and background pointers.
  • Working with soft light, flash fill, shade, plus other factors that help create a better finished portrait. Includes assessment session at studio.

Photoshop Elements Getting Started

This series is to help you get started, understanding how to work your way around this powerful software. Get to know the important basics help you to get the most out of your software.

By completion you should be able to download, size, crop, retouch, insert text and print with confidence.

If you are confused or have bought Photoshop Elements software but have no idea where to start, then this series is for you.

The series runs for two hours each week over 5 weeks.

Week 1: Learn about downloading and organising your photos

  • Downloading and catalogue basics: getting started with downloading.
  • Organising, sorting, creating collections and finding images.

Week 2: Great organiser tools and editing fundamentals

  • Overview of Organiser and Editor functions. Discover clever tools such as Slideshow, Email, Calendars and Archiving.
  • Take a tour of the Editor, understanding the Toolbox, and all about changing image size and saving.

Week 3: All about fixing up photos and adjusting them

  • Cropping and basic adjustments. Help with getting the best out of your images.
  • Adjust to lighten, darken, colour balance and saturation. Tips and tricks.

Week 4: Great retouching and enhancement techniques

  • Basic retouching and enhancement.
  • Lots of little tricks for fixing up those old photos or removing blemishes from the new ones.

Week 5: Putting a title on your picture and printing fundamentals

  • Working with simple text and printing basics. Discover how easy it is to put text or a title on your favourite picture.
  • Learn about printing and what to set your printer on to get the best quality.

Photoshop Raw Getting Started

Want to get started with RAW? Confused by all those controls? Attend our Half-day information packed ‘Intro’ RAW workshop.

If you want ultimate image control, better colour and sharper pictures then this is for you! Bring your camera for hands-on how to use RAW and discover why it’s so amazing.
